What’s New in Generation 2
So what’s the big deal? After all, lightweight Level 4 plates have been around for a while.
Our new custom-engineered Hypure Alumina Oxide ceramics are strong enough to rival the weight and performance of Silicon Carbide without the price tag. Plates you might normally be able to get for around $1000 each are now less than half the price.
Ultra-strength high purity Alumina Oxide isn’t new. But until now, manufacturing at scale with a high enough success rate to be economically viable wasn’t possible. For every 100 attempted ultra strength Alumina ceramics, maybe 10 would survive the kiln. A 90% failure rate means the cost to produce and utilize these ceramics was enormous and impractical.
Today, it isn’t. In fact, it’s only a small price increase over the older lower-purity Alumina ceramics found in most Level 4 plates in the US.
So what does that mean for RMA Level RF3/IV plates? RMA Defense Generation 2 plates are thinner, lighter, and still affordable.
Our new 1155 Generation 2 is only 7.8 lbs in SAPI cut instead of 8.3. The new 1155 Shooter’s Cut model comes in at only 6.7 lbs for $249.99 instead of $349.99.
Our new 1165 Generation 2 is only 6.3 lbs in medium SAPI cut instead of 6.8. The new 1165 Shooter’s Cut medium model comes in at only 5.6 lbs for only $349.99, instead of $999.99.
Why Are RMA Generation 2 Level IV/RF3 Plates So Affordable?
Why make these Generation 2 plates so affordable when we don’t have to? Because that’s what we do. Other companies are looking to swap their more expensive silicon carbide ceramics for these new affordable alumina ceramics without cutting prices to pad their bottom line. Our bottom line is protecting Americans, not feeding a foreign holding company, a board of directors, or shareholders. We answer to Blake, a former Marine and LEO. We build for warfighters, law enforcement, and prepared American citizens. And we do it proudly from our factory in Centerville, Iowa. RMA Generation 2 plates are made for all Americans, not just big-budget government contracts designed to milk taxpayers for big profits.
How Will Generation 2 Change Loadouts?
The biggest shift with RMA’s new Hypure Ceramic-driven Generation 2 Level IV plates will be moving more operators away from Level III+ and back into the Level IV category. The sacrifices required to lighten the weight burden are dramatically less. Why sacrifice so much performance and protection to save a little weight when affordable Level IV plates start at only 5.6 lbs? The modern world is full of cartridges that will defeat most Level III+/RF2 plates. M855A1, M80A1, 7.62X54R AP, and of course 30-06 APM2 are all widely available across the United States.
When the tradeoff was 4 or 8 lb plates, it was an easy to weigh the options and choose Level III+ plates. The Level III+/RF2 category exists explicitly because lightweight Level IV plates have been so heavy or extremely expensive for lighter options.
RMA Defense Generation 2 Hypure Ceramic plates change the decision-making process dramatically in favor of going Level IV. And, you won’t have to have a thick, burdensome plate to get it, either. At only 0.7″ thin, our new 1165 Generation 2 works with streamlined minimalist kits all the way up to entry systems with full IIIA armor coverage.
